In advance of the official identification, here's the profile from the Proboards Mad Trapper Mystery Board from 2019.

The positive ID is with a WWI veteran who was in the Balloon Squadron. More on this later...

It's quite likely that the so-called Mad Trapper was an American Rambo from WW1. If the family reported him prior to the introduction of familial DNA, they would assume that the police had vetted him and ruled him out. But who's to say they did? After all, the police hunted and killed him over a bylaw infraction and reportedly over an unwritten law of arctic hospitality. They don't want the Mad Trapper to be a Hero. He could have gotten ignored.
Familial DNA testing has so far failed to officially identify the Mad Trapper of Rat River. Does that mean that no one who came forward to say that the Trapper was my uncle, my grandfather, my third cousin, or my great great uncle are wrong? Did the crowd-sourcing fail? I doubt it.
A positive match has been made with a distant cousin of the publicized Swedish relatives of TMT has been made with a 2nd cousin of a candidate. It's 10cM but that's exactly what you'd expect no matter what candidate you had.
Candidate seen below.

I can try using an AI age-progression program to show what the kid would look like if you can't already tell it's the same person.

Perfect match.
The Trapper was a pugilist and his nose was smashed on the ice and on the sled after he was killed and the body froze.
Ears and forehead and cheekbone structure don't change. Noses and chins do.
